MasterSingers Omaha Remembers Verla Hamer:
Hamer, Verla E. (Elliott)
Verla passed away Friday April 19th. She is survived by her husband of 61 years David, son Roger, daughter-in-law Patti, granddaughter Constance and grandson Michael. Verla is preceded in death by son Dennis, parents Paul and Luellen Elliott, and sister Shirley Parke. Verla was very active in the local music and entertainment community. She was a longtime member of the vocal and bell choirs at First Central Congregationalist Church, a founding member of Die Meistersingers (The MasterSingers) choral group, a long term volunteer with the American Red Cross, and worked behind the scenes and on stage for the Omaha Press Club Show for 35 years. Verla was born on March 11, 1925 near Emporia, Kansas, graduating from David City High School in 1943. She then worked for the United States Army Air Force as a teletype operator from 1943-45. Verla was a graduate of Midland Lutheran College and was a teacher and coach at Roosevelt School in North Platte, Nebraska. Verla married David Hamer of Wayne, Nebraska on June 29, 1952 and raised two sons, Dennis and Roger. Verla was a cub scout den leader for Pack 75 and taught sewing at Uta Halee.
"Verla oozed The MasterSingers in every pore of her body. I honestly can say that we all gave a lot, time & talent, to the MasterSingers – but Verla gave every fiber of her being. Other than her wonderful husband Dave and her family – there was nothing more important to her than this choral group that loved to make beautiful music. Verla was not the only one in the family to share the love. Verla & Dave opened their home for meetings, to store music (I know, I used to help Verla organize all the music), and they also offered their home for many special events.
She was special – and I will miss her so very much!
I wanted you to know my Verla. She cracked me up, made me laugh and made me cry – all in a good way. I am blessed to call her my dear friend."
